In a PC disks going into sleep mode do not cause the disk to be ejected. So nothing you can do in the Mac will prevent that disconnection. USB 3.0 is somewhere about 150MB/s I believe it was and USB 2. My question is, when I shutdown the Synology NAS and remove ALL of the disks, is it possible to re-insert them again later in the same order and will they still function normally? Its a Sharkoon RAID - the manual says it will switch the disks off internally after 5 minutes of inactivity - putting it into sleep mode. Yeah, continuing on Rodrigos comment, USB 3.1 speeds of up to about 300MB/s can be achieved from USB storage (I have a USB drive that can go up to 1GB/sec with the right ports). Of course I am going to make a backup and migrate the data over to the new disks, but I would like to keep the old disks functioning in the meantime, so if something goes wrong, I can reinsert the old four disks and continue as normal.
