9/9/2023 0 Comments Bruce and mickey spiritfarer![]() In my opinion, despite Bruce's words, I do think that he changed throughout his journey. He had seen so much more of life than the short lived Bruce, and therefore could understand the changing nature of all life, and with that idea a stronger appreciation for being creative and engaged with it. Gustav later claims the opposite: We are all constantly changing, whether as human beings shifting through time or as spirits going from one plane of existence into another. Given lack of looking at the big picture in life coupled with being saddled with a very much unchanging brother and a life filled with the same old shit, you can see why he believes that. As you're rowing Bruce to the Everdoor, he tells you that be believes that no one changes. Spoliers: IOne of the more profound moments of my experience playing the game came from something Bruce said that Gustav later contradicted. Knowing that all your previous passengers have had some level of light and dark within them, and that by working for them and giving them love gives them a chance bring out those subtle human details, you can allow yourself to give them the same giving love as you had the less complicated members of your ship. sniff Bruce had a spiritually short life, and to him, carrying around the guilt, shame, and duty to care for Mickey has loaded him up with a heavy weight for what seems like eons. Hummingbirds only live 3-5 years or so, making it the second shortest only next to Stanley's Amanita, which, yeah. I think it's important to note: Water Buffalos live on average 25 years or so, giving Mickey's spirit animal the longest lifespan on the boat. You know these two spirits are doomed to die. He projects this worldview on to you, Stella, who gets to make a choice. He learned early on that you've gotta be tough to survive and get what you want. Combine this with the hardship of learning to live in a violent, attacking world, and you can see why he lashes out as he does to you. As opposed to someone like Stanley, who I was always pleased to interact with.īruce also has a terrible memory, or at least some kind of inability to communicate clearly. Bruce having to heave the weight of Mickey took noticeably longer than other speak animations, making me really pick and choose when I needed to talk to him. Interesting game design note: I enjoyed how initiating speaking to Bruce in game was even mildly annoying. Bruce literally had to carry the burden of his brain dead brother, emotionally in life and physically represented in the spirit realm. But if you give them a chance and at least do the caring, active love work for them, you might at least get to see a glimpse of humanity within them that makes it all worth it in the end.īoth Bruce and Mickey led a difficult life rife with violence and no one to help show them a path out of the past cycles of abuse they were caught in. Others have annoyances, demanding attitudes, or in Bruce's case (moreso than Mickey's) outright criminal and harmful activity. ![]() Some are more kind, more wise, more helpful than the others. Everyone you meet, both on the boat and off, has some little kink or annoyance that feels wrong or blatantly hurts someone. ![]() Just to spoil the specifics (this is already a spoiler tag after all), Mickey was brain dead and Bruce lashes out because he's angry that his brother is comatose and he refuses to believe it. She loved the job, even when some patients are assholes.Īnd everyone has their own things to worry about. And I found that as Bruce treated me like shit, I eventually started taking care of them just as happily as everyone else, which seems like what I imagine Stella did in life. A good nurse doesn't discriminate and takes care of patients even when they treat them like shit. Of course, Bruce and Mickey were real patients she had, but I also see them as a challenge for the player. The game is an allegory for nursing, since that's what Stella did in real life. ![]() ![]() Also, keep playing because the monologue from them at the end is a bit eye opening So spoilers if you haven't figured this out yet, but here's my interpretation of them in the context of the game. ![]()
